The Oklahoma City Thunder's perfect start came at a steep price. Jalen Williams, the All-Star wing who helped the franchise win the 2025 NBA championship, has a fractured left fibula and a dislocated left ankle and will need surgery, the team announced Monday, Oct. 26, the Associated Press reported. Guard Cason Wallace also needs surgery, for a torn labrum in his left shoulder. The news reshapes the early NBA season for a team that AP said entered the year as a co-favorite for the championship.
What we know
How the injury happened
Williams was hurt on a drive to the basket with 1:14 remaining in Sunday's game against the Los Angeles Clippers at the Paycom Center. According to Hoops Rumors, he was fouled hard in the air and his left leg was caught under the weight of his body as he fell. Medical staff reached him almost immediately, his ankle was draped with towels, and players from both teams "reacted with dismay and disbelief as a stretcher was brought out," AP wrote. The game was stopped for about five minutes. Oklahoma City held on to win 108-101.
The Guardian reported that Williams, 25, covered his mouth with his hands when he looked down at the injury.
The diagnosis and what Presti said
General manager Sam Presti confirmed the diagnosis at a Monday news conference in Oklahoma City. "We'll have a timeline for everybody once we get through the surgery," he said, per AP. "He's as tough as they come. Just an elite competitor."
Presti struck a measured tone, according to Hoops Rumors: "Obviously, tough night last night. There's no way to paint that differently," he said. "We're extremely optimistic about the recovery for both of the players. Most importantly, things could've been a lot worse." He also drew a distinction the organization uses internally: "We say within our walls all of the time that there's a difference between being positive and being optimistic. I'm not going to sit up here and say this is exactly where we want to be." He added that Williams was in good spirits.
ESPN's Shams Charania reported that both Williams and Wallace are expected to miss several months, Hoops Rumors noted. AP observed that, given the history of such injuries, it is reasonable to think Williams could miss the rest of the season, though the team has not said so.
Cason Wallace and other injuries
Wallace left Sunday's game in the first quarter with what was initially called left shoulder soreness. He has a torn left labrum and will have surgery, Presti said. Forward Jaylin Williams also left in the first quarter with right wrist soreness, The Guardian reported.
| Player | Injury | Status (Oct. 26) |
|---|---|---|
| Jalen Williams | Fractured left fibula, dislocated left ankle | Surgery; timeline after procedure |
| Cason Wallace | Torn left shoulder labrum | Surgery; timeline after procedure |
| Jaylin Williams | Right wrist soreness | Left Oct. 25 game in first quarter |

Why Williams matters so much to OKC
Williams has averaged 17.9 points in 251 games over his first five seasons and has already been an All-Star and an All-NBA selection, AP noted. In the 2025 title run, he averaged 21.4 points, 5.5 rebounds and 4.8 assists without missing a postseason game, despite playing through a wrist injury that later required surgery, according to Hoops Rumors.
Last season was harder. He missed 49 games with an array of problems, including hamstring strains and recovery from right wrist surgery, and appeared in only five of Oklahoma City's 15 playoff games. The Thunder lost to the San Antonio Spurs in a seven-game Western Conference finals. They entered this season as a co-favorite with the Spurs to win the title, AP said, and have had the West's best record in each of the past three seasons, winning 57, 68 and 64 games, according to Hoops Rumors.
Wallace's loss compounds the problem. The 2023 No. 10 pick entered this season as a full-time starter for the first time and recently signed a five-year, $139 million extension that begins in 2027-28, Hoops Rumors reported. Both players were key contributors to the 2025 championship team.
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander's reaction
Star guard Shai Gilgeous-Alexander scored 34 points in the win but was in tears afterward, The Guardian reported. "I just feel bad for him," he said. "He's not gone for ever. He'll be back better than ever, and we know it. We've just got to hold the fort down until he comes back."
Coach Mark Daigneault summed up the mood after the game: "We're not doing great."
What's next
- Surgery for both players. The Thunder said return timelines will be shared after the operations.
- More minutes for the bench. Hoops Rumors pointed to Ajay Mitchell, Alex Caruso and Jared McCain as reserves likely to take on bigger roles. Nikola Topić and Thomas Sorber are also currently out.
- Roster options. ESPN's Bobby Marks noted that the Thunder could apply for disabled player exceptions, worth a little over $15 million for Williams and $3.7 million for Wallace, but only if an NBA-designated physician judges them likely to be out through June 15. Presti said he hadn't yet thought about the open 15th roster spot.
- Watch the standings. At 3-0, Oklahoma City still has a strong core, but the West race will look different without two starters for months.
The bottom line
